Chapter Seventeen
Talbot hissed as his personal servant, one he'd told his father to use elsewhere in the household numerous times, dabbed a bit of brandy on his knuckles. A waste of good alcohol in his mind. By morning, no thanks to his self-pleasure before bedtime, they had swollen. The cuts didn't seem too bad but because his father had heard from the Comte—curse the man!—on where Talbot had roamed, a thorough cleansing was ordered.
"That is quite enough." He jerked his hand away but the servant held firm. Plain as a woman could be, her smile was wicked as she continued her task. Talbot had never hit a woman but she pounded on his self-control with copious amounts of brandy.
"Milord's father said to make sure they be clean, and I'm not one to shirk my duties like some around here."
"Impetuous woman."
"Stubborn man." She huffed back. "It's a wonder no woman be in your bed."
"How dare you talk as such to me." Talbot snarled out as she poured the more of the brandy over the largest gnash on his knuckles. He sucked air through his teeth.
"I speak as I please while I do your father's bidding. Be still and stop acting like a child." She dried off his hands and began to wrap a clean cloth around them. She tied it under his piercing gaze.
"It is done then?"
"Oui." She packed up her basket.
He bolted from his chair. She laughed.
Talbot held his hands away from her as she approached. If she wished to unwrap and start the process anew, no one would save him from her torture. Not the rake causing all sort of mischief for House Sauvageot.
"I'm to give you a message." She smiled and laid a hand on his forearm. He cursed as he flinched. "Word of your deed has spread like wildfire. What you did was noble, milord."
"A lot of good it did. I have lost Sabine."
"If you knew you'd lose her, would it change anything?"
Talbot shook his head. "Non. The man got what he deserved."
She grinned. "Good day, milord. I've hid a bottle of red under your bed for later." She winked and left his room
Talbot slumped in his chair by the dying fire. Perhaps in a day, his hands would feel better. More so if he refrained from self-pleasure. Even better if he stayed on his father's good side, and his she-devil nursemaid was sent elsewhere to work in the house. If the promise of fine wine be true, he'd forgive her for the torture.
"Is it your plan to sulk all week?"
Talbot turned to see his father standing in the doorway. Scowling, he brought his attention back to the dying embers. "Not much else I can do."
"Nonsense. I have not forbid you to leave the estate. I merely wish you to act rationally."
"Rationally?" Talbot snorted. "No more than your notion that the money your father earned on the backs of the peasants was an honest living. I commend you, Father, for your tenacity in trying to rival the
